The
Book of Judges contains 21 chapters and is the
seventh book in the Bible. You can find it in
the Old Testament between the Book of Joshua and
the Book of Ruth. To this date the author is
unknown, although many guess that it was Samuel.
His prophetic ministry clearly fits the moral
commentary of Judges. With the style being
consistent throughout this book and put together
in an orderly fashion, it becomes obvious that
there was only one author of this book. If
Samuel was not the one to author judges, it was
at least authored by one of his peers between
1043 B.C. which was the beginning of Saul's
reign and 1004 B.C. which was when David
captured Jerusalem.
Following the death of Joshua, Israel dives into
a "Dark Age" of 350 years. The
generation that rose up after Joshua was
completely opposite in nature. Unlike the
obedient people who conquered the land through
trusting God in Joshua's time, these people were
disobedient and idolatrous who became defeated
over and over again because of their rebellion
against God. Throughout Judges, the sin to
salvation cycle repeats itself many times.
Stories of the different tribes' failures
followed by the stories about the Judges who
reigned in Israel over a 350 year period

"Then the anger of the Lord was hot against
Israel; and He said, 'Because this nation has
transgressed My covenant which I commanded their
fathers, and has not heeded My voice, I also
will no longer drive out before them any of the
nations which Joshua left when he died'"
Judges 2:20,21 along with"In those days
there was no king in Israel; everyone did what
was right in his own eyes" Judges 21:25 are
2 of the key verses in this book. When you read
Judges 2, keep in mind that it is liken to a
mini-Judges which means the book of Judges
melted down into one chapter.
